Watercolor on paper, 9″x12″,  by Evy Okerstrom, unframed, contact me if interested

In April, we are heading back into urban sketching with Marc Taro Holmes book “The Urban Sketcher”.  After exploring different options, the class chose this guide for its practical techniques in observing and sketching on location.  It includes chapters on the use of pen, ink, and watercolor.  Join us Wednesdays starting April 3rd at Trinity Lutheran Church from 1 pm to 4 pm. We will start each week with a lesson related to the book, and then practice some exercises or we may go to various locations to get more sketching experience.  Students are encouraged to bring a project to work on and various mediums to experiment with.  The cost of the class is $25 per session. Contact me at eokerstrom22@gmail.com with any questions.

March ended with us finishing the exploration of expressionist colors and abstract art in the Annette Compton book. We worked on a range of exercises suitable for all skill levels. It is hard to get your head around abstract painting when you are used to painting and thinking realistic.  The class was ready, and came up with some great images. The Compton book will continue to be a good reference for watercolor artists.

As we transition to other sketching with watercolor, pen and ink classes, I will share with you some of our past exercises, including a captivating Sunflower piece inspired by one of our classes on negative painting.  The reference photo, taken by me was in my family’s garden in Maine.

Thought of the day… “A wet shape you have just painted can be thought of as alive. As long as it remains damp it is active, wanting to move.  Unless you disturb it, it will sit in a puddle, waiting for an opportunity to flow. On a fresh white sheet, it is surrounded by an area of dry paper that is dead, inert. Watercolor pigment will never cross the wet/dry (alive/dead) edge. The moment it reaches the dry paper, it abruptly stops moving, piling up along the dry border, forming a sharp edge. “

” Morning Fog” by Evy Okerstrom, Watercolor, 9″ x 12″. If interested please contact me

In February, my days were filled with classes at Trinity Lutheran Church and the Hub on Canal. The classes at the Hub were well attended with as many as 9 students, and more signing up. I challenged myself to complete a painting of a serene harbor scene in Maine, inspired by early morning fog. Later this month I will be sponsoring an award at the Artists Workshop Annual Members Show.

 Lennie’s House, ME

The weekly classes are Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church (1-4 pm), and Thursday at The Hub on Canal (12:30-3:30 pm). Hub classes end March 28th, and the Trinity classes will continue. This month we focused on techniques from Annette Compton’s book. We practiced thumbnail sketches for composition. Outdoors we did Plein air drawing, working quickly with only a pen to capture fleeting light.  If you are interested or have questions about the classes contact me at eokerstrom22@gmail.com.

Exciting news: the Artists’ Workshop will open their annual members show March 4, 2024 at the studio on 540 Barracuda Blvd. NSB.  On Sunday afternoon, March 10th, is a reception and awards.  I have sponsored an award for the best “Pen and ink with Watercolor Wash” painting in honor of my Mother, Joanne Bailey Reitzel.  My Mother loved to draw with pen and ink and was an inspiration for my pen and ink artwork. She would be very happy.

Kokopelli, the Native American spirit of spring
Watercolor, Gouache and Pen & Ink,
20.5″ x 16″,
$500

This month I continue my art journey with my weekly classes in sketching using watercolor, pen & ink.  January’s Talk Art at the Hub was a real success!  I talked about my art and did a demo of my class.  Everyone was invited to participate, and they all left with an original painting done by them. I am excited to announce that I have a new exhibit on Canal Street here in NSB that will be on view for the next 3 months.

In weekly classes, Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church (1-4 pm), and Thursday at The Hub on Canal (12:30-3:30 pm), we explored watercolors. Discussing types like “lift able”, “sedimentary” and “staining”; Students loved it!  We are now working on painting using triads, 3 different colors to compose a painting. If you are interested or have questions about the classes contact me at eokerstrom22@gmail.com

“Red Barn in Snow” , watercolor by Evy Okerstrom, is an example of painting with a palette of 3 colors. Note: I did use Daniel Smith’s “ground” for the snow.

My new exhibit of floral watercolor paintings is at Nature in Beauty Boutique and Parlor.  The Salon’s location is 314 Canal Street, NSB 32168. The hours are 10am to 5pm, M-Sat (closed  Sunday).  Liz Jones, the owner is very supportive of the arts.  The exhibit is sponsored by the Artists’ Workshop of NSB.  Please stop by to see the exhibit and meet Liz and her staff.

From me:  Happy Valentines’ Day to everyone! Take a moment to send a card, or call someone who might be sick or a shut in. It will make their day!

“Elite Feet Luxury Foot Care Spa”,
by Evy Okerstrom,
Watercolor, Pen & Ink

My creative life continues with two exciting commissions. First, I was asked to paint a picture of the Elite Feet, Luxury Foot Care Spa in watercolor, pen & ink. The result was a picture of a beautiful place to spend time relaxing while being pampered by the staff at the spa. It also showcases the spa’s name prominently. The Elite Feet Studio is located at 4319 S. Ridgewood Ave., Port Orange, FL 32127, ph: 386-717-3311.  The second commission by a member of Trinity Lutheran Church is a vibrant acrylic painting with a radiant rainbow against the background of late afternoon clouds at sunset. It has a bible verse celebrating the beauty of rainbows as a symbol of hope.  This painting will be hung in the Fellowship Hall at Trinity Lutheran Church, 485 Turnbull Bay Rd, NSB, FL 32168. Both places are open for you to see these paintings.

It opens Friday, November 17th with a Members Preview at 5:30 pm, and Saturday, November 18th it will be open from 10am to 5 pm until Christmas Eve. Be sure to mark your calendars for these dates!  This year, I am again creating a series of small 5” x 5” watercolor and pen & ink paintings, perfect for that special someone.  My new 2024 calendars, which have plenty of space to write notes, will be there too.

I will not be teaching in November and December. I will resume my Urban Sketching with Watercolor, Pen & Ink in January. Stay tuned for more details next month.

“Afternoon Sun”
watercolor. 12″x15″
by Evy Okerstrom, $300

Welcome to my art newsletter. I am excited to tell you about my new exhibit of summer landscapes that are currently on display at the Hub on Canal here in New Smyrna Beach. The inspiration for these paintings came from my trip to Maine last year, and from the drawing exercises done while teaching. The trip to Blue Hill, Maine was to visit my family, where I was taken by the beautiful rugged scenery, water, rocks and play of light and shadows. The second inspiration came from my classes at The Hub on Canal.

“The Year of the Rabbit”,
watercolor, pen and ink, 13″x16″,
by Evy Okerstrom, $400
“Stairway to the Beach”,
watercolor, pen and ink, 14″x17,
by Evy Okerstrom $400
“Looking out at Blue Hill Bay”,
mixed media, 12″x15″,
by Evy Okerstrom, $400

I have 5 new paintings on view until October. “Afternoon Sun” is a watercolor with a view of light filtering through the forest and rocks lining Blue Hill Bay. “Stairway to the Beach at Blue Hill” was a drawing done in pen and ink then washed in watercolor. “The View from Lennie’s Kitchen” is another pen and ink drawing with watercolor wash. See if you can find the squirrel and bird in the picture. “The year of the Rabbit” is a watercolor, pen and ink painting that was a class exercise. “Looking out at Blue Hill Bay” is another class exercise in composition.

This watercolor painting was created using the background of Blue Hill Bay with a sail boat, then adding subject matter from different sources. Rocks and foliage were created using textured materials, and then adding a bird for interest using pen and ink. Now that you know the back story, enjoy the exhibit!

Let me take a moment to tell you about The Hub on Canal in New Smyrna Beach. It opened in 2012 as a place where the community could gather to experience all kinds of art. It provides a wide range of activities. Art exhibits, classes, workshops, music nights, and art camp for kids are just a few of the events that the Hub has to offer. In March the Hub received the gift of Jane’s Art Center, another art gallery in NSB. They are always working to create better experiences for the community. I have benefited from teaching classes and taking social media classes to learn how to market my artwork.
Speaking of classes, I will begin a new series of classes at the Hub on Thursday, September 7, 2023 called “Urban Sketching with Watercolor, Pen & Ink”. This is a great way to capture the essence of a cityscape or everyday things. This is a 3 week class (no class Sept. 14th) All levels are welcome; $75/series or $25/class. Contact me if you are interested.

“Lennie’s Garden, Blue Hill, Me.” by Evy Okerstrom, 9″ x 12″, Watercolor, Pen & Ink, for sale, contact me if interested.

Thanks for joining me for the August Art News!  Have you ever wondered how a pen and ink plus watercolor can change a sheet of paper into a piece of art?  In July, I made a video to show the “process” of how I create a pen and ink drawing with watercolor. I wanted to share the steps with you. Note: this is a picture from my 2022 Maine trip.

Let’s start with the tools. Pens: There are a lot of different pens for drawing. I use a black water resistant style. The Uniball Eye Series and Sukura Micron pens work well.  Paper: 140 lb cold press watercolor paper with a smooth finish is good for pen and ink as well as watercolor. Watercolor: Pans or tubes work well.

Sketch with a pencil and then a pen: Use a light #2 pencil to sketch your picture. This allows you to plan out your picture. Once you have that done, use your pen to trace over the pencil lines. When the ink has dried, you can add texture and pattern by using the pen’s various marks. For example cross hatching or stippling, etc. Then when the ink is dry, erase the pencil lines.

Watercolor:  Add some color to make your picture pop! The use of color can make the black and white drawing come alive. Just make sure you are using a water resistant pen.

The Conclusion:

1. the process does not take a long time to create a picture.
2. Materials are easy to use.
3. Combine drawing with paint.
4. Lets you explore colors with paint.
5. Have fun, and keep drawing and painting!

My weekly classes at Trinity Lutheran Church continue on Wednesday afternoons, 1 pm to 4 pm. The Hub on Canal classes resume in September. Time: Thursday from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm. September class dates: 7, no class on the 14th, 21 and 28. October class dates are 5th, 12, 19, & 26. The name of the class is Sketching with Watercolor, Pen & Ink. The fee per class is $25. A supply list is available. If you have questions email me at eokerstrom22@gmail.com.

My Thought of the Day:  The Studio at Elite Feet, Nail & Hair salon in Port Orange: This is the sign on the wall. Each employee expressed how they felt about themselves!  You can feel it from the excellent service they provide.

Welcome back. It is definitely summer here! The weather has been hot and humid and we have had thunderstorms every afternoon with strong lightening. This is typical for this time of the year. Mornings are the coolest time of the day and the best time to walk on the beach or catch a swim. One of my students, Nancy, told me that a green sea turtle had laid her eggs a few nights ago near her property at the beach. Rare green turtles are coming ashore at night from the warm ocean to lay their eggs. They will hatch in about 2 months, and find their way back to the ocean. Volunteers place fences around the nesting areas to protect the hatchlings. This year has been challenging for the turtle moms because there has been so much erosion of the beaches from last fall’s hurricanes. New seawalls have been erected where there were piles of sand to dig a nest. In spite of this, the turtle that came to Nancy’s area was successful in laying her eggs. The turtles return to the sea and do not come back for about 20 years when they are mature. It is amazing to think that their instincts hold the memory of the beach location for that long.

I am currently working on a new painting based on my childhood memories. Attached is an image. For some reference, I have been studying the art of Marc Chagall. His dream like paintings were based upon his childhood memories when he lived in Russia. I have done a pen and ink sketch of memories I have of when I lived in Valley Forge, PA. I was about 9 years old. My parents rented a house owned by the American artist Wharton Esherick who made furniture. His studio was on a hill above our home, and he had a yard with all kinds of animal statues. The house was near the famous Diamond Hill Schoolhouse that was built in 1834. I enjoyed my school and played the cello. My cousin Len lived nearby. It was a good time. I have tried to recall the fuzzy images I have of that year.

My weekly classes at the Artist’s Workshop continue thru Thursday August 17th. They are from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. The Wednesday classes at Trinity Lutheran Church will resume Wednesday, July 12th and they are from 1 pm to 4 pm. The name of the class is Sketching with Watercolor, Pen & Ink. If you have questions email me at eokerstrom22@gmail.com. Thank you.
