June 2021 Art News from Evy Okerstrom

Flowers in Vase

(It is good to have everyone back for my June art news! Sprezzatura! What is that? Read about it in my blog! First, I begin with a review of my May class:
This past month in my Sketching with Watercolor, Pen & Ink class, we covered Flowers, Birds, and Patterns. The last week was on Urban Sketching. Week One: We drew flowers in vases and then painted them in watercolor. I brought in several uncut bouquets of various flowers and some dollar store vases. Each person picked a vase and flowers to make an arrangement. At the end each person went home with a picture and a vase of flowers. It was close to Mothers Day, so it was a good time to do this. Week Two: The following week I talked about drawing birds, not just the ones we see here but all of them in general. I also handed out an article from the local paper, The Daytona, News- Journal, about rare, endangered birds that were nesting on Disappearing Island in the Ponce Inlet. They are “Wilson’s Plovers” and “Least Terns”. I have attached the article with photos of these birds to this blog for you to read. (Rare Shorebirds find home on Volusiarsquos disappearing island) A few of the members painted some of these. I did all three and will include them here for you to see. Week Three: The third week we had some fun looking for patterns in objects around us. One handout was about drawing the textures of different fabrics using pen and Ink and watercolor. I brought in some fabrics that I had collected from my various trips like silk and lace. Some of us looked for patterns outside in the Hub Courtyard. I have one sketch I did outside. Week Four: The last class was on urban sketching which has become very popular. Since most members will be visiting family and new places, I thought this was a way to encourage everyone to be observant and carry a sketchbook.
