“Sunlight late Winter Afternoon”
(this was chosen to be in an online show by Florida Watercolor Society)

In March, my watercolor painting: “Sunlight late Winter Afternoon” was selected for the Florida Watercolor Society 2026 Associate Member Online Show. Juror Michael Holter chose 89 works for the exhibit. I am honored to be included.

You can view the show at floridawatercolorsociety.org/Featured-Exhibitions.

“The Colombian Girl in the Marketplace” is currently on view at Gallery500, ONE DAYTONA, in Daytona Beach. It is part of the exhibit “Her Story, in Color”, presented by the Florida Women’s Arts Association. This acrylic painting explores one woman’s story through color and expression. The exhibit runs through April 26.
“The Palm Grove”, a mixed media piece, is on exhibit at the Art League of Daytona Beach. The show, “The Way I see it”, features abstract, surreal and impressionistic art work. It runs March 29 through April 24. The Art League is located at 433 S. Palmetto Ave., Daytona Beach, FL 32114.
This is a picture of me holding “In the Palm Grove” , this is a mixed media picture. It is for sale at $500.

In my Monday class at Trinity Lutheran Church, we focused on composition and collage design. Students explored common formats and created their own designs. I demonstrated paper dyeing and shared examples from artist Robert Kushner. We also spent time drawing flowers. Next month, we will study additional artists.

Our Urban Sketching group met March 3 at the Stardust Antique Mall and March 31 at the Daytona Beach Pier. Both outings were inspiring and well attended.

Thank you for your continued encouragement.
Happy Easter!

“The Colombian Girl in the Marketplace”
by Evy Okerstrom,
Acrylic, 18″x14″, $500

At the beginning of the year I wanted to take more time to work on my painting. My goal was to complete one new painting each month. By the end of February I had finished two. That feels like a good start.

In March, one painting is being juried for an online exhibit, and another is in a local Members Show. I also entered a colorful painting from last year that will be on display through April in Daytona Beach.

“Sunlight late Winter Afternoon”, is a watercolor inspired by the view behind my home. I was drawn to the warm orange light reflecting on the water. It was submitted to the Florida Watercolor Artists 2026 Associate Member Online Exhibition.

“Sunlight late Winter Afternoon” by Evy Okerstrom,
9″x12″, Watercolor, $400.
“The Palm Grove” is a mixed media collage using paper and acrylics. The palms outside my studio window inspired it. I outlined the palms in white, which was new for me but very effective. The painting will be at the Artists’ Workshop of New Smyrna Beach in March.

“The Colombian Girl in the Marketplace”, is a bright acrylic painting that explores women’s stories and experiences. It will be shown at Gallery500 in Daytona Beach through April and during the ONE DAYTONA Art Festival.

My Monday art class at Trinity continues with steady attendance. This month we are going to study composition and experiment with dying paper for collage.

Our new Urban Sketching group met in DeLand in February. About 20 artists attended, and we were warmly supported by the Orlando group. Our next outing is March 3rd.

Thank you for your continued encouragement.
Happy spring!

February 2026 Calendar image:
“Bee Balm Flowers with a Bee”,
watercolor by Evy Okerstrom.
(note calendar is $15 plus shipping and taxes)

February has always been a special month for me. When I lived in New England, winter felt long and dark. I was always drawn to bright colors, especially red. Red still feels cheerful to me, which is why I often include it in my February calendar images. Valentine’s Day is another reason I love this month. I have always enjoyed making cards for family and friends.

The new Urban Sketching group of Daytona Beach is growing. Our second outing was held on January 15 at The Casements in Ormond Beach. Nineteen people attended. It was a cool day, so many sketched indoors. I chose to work outside and drew the building. The group has a Facebook page and plans to meet again in February. There is no cost to join.

Thank you for your continued support.
Happy Valentine’s Day!

“New Mexico” by Evy Okerstrom,
medium is acrylic, Price: $400.
This is my entry for the “Positivity Don’t Worry, Be Happy, Create”! Exhibit at the Casements in Ormond Beach.

The New Year brings fresh ideas and renewed energy to my Monday art class at Trinity Lutheran Church.

January finds the class focused on turning practice into presentation.  Students are working on drawing and watercolor, refining line, value and color as their pieces move from the presketch to a gallery style display in the Fellowship Hall.  Seeing their work move from easel to wall has been especially rewarding.  The room begins to feel like a small gallery, and students gain confidence not only in their artwork, but in sharing with others.  Several finished pieces will be available for purchase, making this a meaningful step for many who are showing their work publicly for the first time.

The Art Class at Trinity meets on Mondays in the Fellowship Hall. The time is 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm.   January classes will begin Monday, January 5th and continue weekly. If you are interested you can contact me at eokerstrom22@gmail.com or 859-699-1506. Note: you do not have to attend every week. I charge $25 per class, and this covers various supplies that I hand out at each class. If you would like a supply list, let me know.

In December, I introduced “The Cardinal Collection”. Items can be used year round.  This included a 16”x15”canvas tote bag ($20) with a 3”x3” magnet ($5) and a note card ($5) with the Cardinal image. They are sold separately or as a set.  Let me know if you are interested in owning this Collection, as I have some of them still available.

“The Cardinal Collection”

“Positivity Don’t Worry, Be Happy, Create!” is the theme of the Florida Women’s Arts Association’s January Exhibit.  The Casements, 25 Riverside Drive, Ormond Beach will hold the show January 3 – 29, 2026.  All forms of expressions will be shown from abstract to representational. I will have my painting “New Mexico” in the exhibit. I hope you will able to stop by to see the exhibit.

Happy New Year 2026! Thank you for your support.

 Atrium Wall Picture.
“My Backyard” by Evy Okerstrom
watercolor, pen and ink
Framed 16″x20″, Price: $400

The Reception November 15th at the Hub on Canal was a great success. It opened the exhibit  “NSB, A Little Slice of Paradise”. The event was created by Jacob Coronado, the new Community and Curatorial Director.  His goal was to help the community learn more about local artists.  He chose six Hub Artists and placed their work on the large lobby wall for two months. I was honored to be one of the first artists selected.

Invitations went out to friends and family.  A large crowd came and the event was live-streamed on Instagram. Jacob asked each artist questions about our work and about New Smyrna Beach.  This allowed us to share our ideas with the audience.  The crowd enjoyed the conversations, and the evening felt warm and lively.  After the talk, we spent time visiting with the guests. I left feeling very grateful.

On Sunday, December 14, I will have a Holiday Card Workshop at the Hub. The class is $50 and runs from 1 to 4 pm. Please use this link to sign up.  Paint Your Holiday Cards with Watercolor Artist Evy Okerstrom – The Hub on Canal

“Flowers in an Orange Vase”, by Evy Okerstrom,
Demonstration for Talk Art June 7, 2025 at the Hub on Canal,
Watercolor, Pen & Ink.

Urban sketching was the topic I spoke about June 7th at the Hub on Canal.  I did a demonstration of drawing and painting flowers in an orange vase! The women who attended expressed an interest in the process and asked a lot of good questions. I could tell that they had some experience with watercolor. I told them that I would be having weekly classes on Thursdays at the Hub starting in September.  I will have a starting date next month.

June classes at Trinity Lutheran Church continued.  We worked on rural landscapes in Cumbria, England.  Landscapes come with a different set of challenges. For example the scenery can look much the same especially if there is a lot of green forest. We learned to layer the scene using color for depth.

 “Rural Landscape, Cumbria, England”,
Watercolor, & Pen exercise in layering color.

After that, I asked the students for some suggestions on what they would like to work on. Drawing and painting glass was an idea. We spent a class on that. I did a basic overview of the process; with a lamp, showing the effect light has on glass to create the dramatic shadows in paintings. We did an exercise to paint reflected shadows.

A photo of a glass candlestick used for  the painting glass exercise

The painting of the candlestick with reflection.

The following 2 weeks, we worked on figures.  I did a basic introduction in drawing people, and divided it into 3 parts.  The first week was on faces, and drawing each other.  The last week, returning to urban sketching, we used our figure drawing skills to add people in cityscapes.

A sketch of my students’ faces.

Classes at Trinity continue on Mondays from 12:30 to 3:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall. July classes begin on the 7th.  We’ll focus on urban sketching. All levels are welcome.

Thank you for your interest—and Happy 4th of July!
